Understanding how you are doing is important for planning what’s next in your treatment or care. CAT-MH was created to make that process easier, faster, and more accurate so that your visits can focus on what to do next instead of assessment.
What is CAT-MH?
Computerized Adaptive Test for Mental Health, or CAT-MH, is an adaptive mental health measurement and screening system validated by researchers and developed by our partner, Adaptive Testing Technologies. It is a suite of measures for assessing depression, anxiety, mania/hypomania, substance use disorder, psychosis, PTSD, social determinants of health, adult ADHD, and suicidality.
The assessment is quick and easy to use, meaning completing the assessment should only take a few minutes. The questions are available in English and Spanish and can be read out loud to users.
How does Perspectives use CAT-MH?
Perspectives has the honor of being the first Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to use this beta-tested technology. This data-driven care approach enables clinicians to save time in the assessment phase so they can dedicate a majority of sessions to recovery and a path to well-being.
How does CAT-MH Work?

Computerized adaptive testing (CAT) works by selecting questions that are most relevant to the patient from a large item bank to quickly understand how you are feeling.

Statistical formulas within the CAT-MH calculate a precise severity score that patients and their clinicians can track over time.

Results inform and improve treatment plans by helping clinicians understand how patients are doing.
- The information is only provided to the clinician, ensuring a patient's health data is safe.
What types of questions does CAT-MH ask?
The assessment will ask questions about how a patient has been feeling recently. They are asked to think about a certain time period and answer questions such as:
