WHAT IS AN EAP

An EAP assists employees and their family members (not just covered insured beneficiaries) in identifying the nature of personal concerns and recommending options for resolving those concerns. Below are some key features of the EAP:

The EAP is voluntary. Employees are free to use the EAP if they want to use it. It is a personal choice. In some situations, a supervisor may recommend EAP because of poor job performance. In those situations, the EAP may be able to help you learn better ways to deal with issues in your life which may be contributing to your job performance problems. But even in these situations, use of the EAP is still your choice in the same manner as improving your job performance is your responsibility.

The EAP is confidential. No information is shared without your written permission. There is no record of EAP participation in your personnel file. Even in situations where a job referral is made, with your written consent, your supervisor will be told only whether or not you have followed through with your EAP appointment and any recommendations.

There is no cost to you for use of the EAP. This mean that any assessment, referral or short term counseling will be free to you and/or your family member. After the assessment however, should a referral to an outside community resource be needed, you will be responsible for the cost of those services. The EAP will carefully consider your ability to pay for these services and work with you in finding resources that are affordable and, in many cases, covered by your health insurance.
